Whole Grain Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe

Cookies are one of the favorite snacks of children nationwide.  Perhaps it all started with Santa Claus.  He doesn’t exactly put on the best image for a healthy, slim and trim America.  Or maybe, the cookie craze comes from Sesame Street’s Cookie Monster: a blue, furry, googly-eyed monster who goes absolutely gaga for anything remotely resembling a cookie.  Whatever the reason, a general love for cookies seems to be here to stay.  Instead of going crazy fighting your children’s love for cookies, transform the cookies into healthier, more wholesome cookies by trying a whole grain cookie recipe!

Whole grains are gaining popularity because of their rich nutritious content and slowly digesting carbs which can raise your metabolism and help shed the pounds!  Whole wheat flour, whole wheat pasta, and brown rice are gracing more and more tables across the country.  You can tap into this healthy trend with a whole grain oatmeal chocolate chip cookie recipe.  These cookies are warm and delicious and much healthier than cookies made with enriched white flour!

  • 1 and 3/4 cups of whole wheat flour or oat flour
  • 2 cups of uncooked oatmeal
  • 1/4 cup of brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup of white sugar
  • 1/4 cup of vegetable oil
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1/4 cup of milk or soy milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda
  • 1 and 1/2 teaspoons of pure vanilla extract
  • A pinch of salt
  • 1 cup of semi-sweet chocolate chips

Mix together the dry ingredients in a bowl and set aside.  In another bowl beat the egg until it begins to lighten in color.  Add the oil, applesauce and milk and beat until smooth.  Beat in the white and brown sugar.  Add the vanilla and beat until smooth.  Slowly add the dry ingredients until a sticky cookie batter is formed.  Fold in the chocolate chips.  Preheat your oven to 350 degrees fahrenheit.  On a non-greased cookie sheet, drop the cookie batter in spoonfuls.  Bake the cookies for about eight minutes until they are crispy on the edges but still slightly doughy in the center.  Eat them while they are warm!
