How Does the Lemon Water Diet Work? Recipe for Lemon Water Detox

Lemon Water Diet

For many dieters, the complicated and expensive dieting techniques that are being offered by the handful can be overwhelming and downright confusing.  It seems, today, that the only way to effectively diet is to purchase hundreds of dollars worth of expensive food and follow an impossibly rigorous workout routine.  What if, however, the problem with dieting was inadequate preparation?  With three to ten days of a lemon water diet, you can give yourself the energy to start a real dieting regime and increase your success potential!

What Is A Lemon Water Diet?

Surprise, surprise; the lemon water diet is pretty much exactly what it sounds like.  A short-term, intensive fast where the dieter only drinks large quantities of lemon juice diluted with lukewarm water.  Sounds crazy?  Of course it does!  However, the results aren’t crazy: They’re fantastic!  Scientists have been marveling for centuries about the miraculous effects of the high-citric acid content of lemons and other citrus fruits.

You know that citrus fruits contain high quantities of Vitamin C, but the effects don’t stop there.  A systematic, intentional diet of water-diluted lemon juice can help with a number of regular bodily functions.  The lemon water diet, or lemon water detox, can:

  • Increase energy, especially immediately after waking in the morning
  • Improve healthy liver function
  • Eliminate harmful plaque buildup in the intestines and stomach
  • Increase the healthy radiance of skin and hair
  • Eliminate poisonous bile and uric acid from the system
  • Alleviate issues with bleeding and/or hemorrhaging
  • Prevent the linings of internal organs from rotting or putrefying
  • Prevent a number of diseases and bacterial infections
  • Effectively eliminate your risk of contracting the common cold

It sounds like a miracle doesn’t it?  However, the miracle is in the science of a lemon.  Lemons have natural antiseptic properties, and, when used correctly, can purify the entire bodily system much like you would disinfect a countertop.  Although, drinking lemon juice is much, much safer than swallowing a tablespoonful of Lysol.

Lemon Water To Lose Weight

A lemon water diet or lemon water detox has also been shown to help the dieter jump start his or her weight loss program.  Because a great deal of weight gain stems from water retention due to the body’s inability to regulate water, a diet that is strictly lemon juice and water will reteach the body how to use and maintain proper water levels.  The lemon juice will also give you increased levels of energy, encouraging you to hit the gym!

Lemon water diets vary in duration and requirements.  Some suggest that you only drink lemon water for three or four days.  Others suggest you pair lemon water with fresh vegetables for ten days or more.  Whichever you choose, you’ll need a surefire recipe for lemon water.  Here’s the best one:

  • The juice of half a lemon
  • One cup of pure water (lukewarm is best)
  • One teaspoon of pure honey with no additives
  • One eighth of a teaspoon of cayenne pepper (optional)

The lemon water diet/cleanse sounds very interesting. How do you recommend it be taken; once, twice, three times or maybe drink it as you would your regular drink of water?

Kenny Knott January 11, 2013 at 6:35 pm

Can you use lemon juice from a squeeze bottle ?

didi January 11, 2013 at 8:22 pm

This actually works! I discovered this when my mom had exercise tapes by Richard Simmons, and he recommended that every morning the person would drink a mug of hot water, fresh lemon juice and cayenne pepper. It works!

Would cold water work just as well as lukewarm water?

Dave C January 14, 2013 at 2:46 pm

Surprise, surprise; the lemon water diet is pretty much exactly what it sounds like. A short-term, intensive fast where the dieter only drinks large quantities of lemon juice diluted with lukewarm water. Seems to me that the admin is wrong in saying after meals. This is a fasting Detox diet where the only thing you have is lemon water, nothing else…

Would it be ok to use True Lemon packets??

Rose January 15, 2013 at 9:24 am

Also is the honey optional, and can Agave be substituted?? I am a diabetic an I don’t think I am suppose to use honey. Also I am able to drink the lemon water without sweetness. I love lemons. Also is the juice of a whole lemon okay, would that work better since the packets are a whole lemon???

Bikayaa January 15, 2013 at 1:30 pm

Is the honey a necessity or just to tone the tartness of the lemon?

Mary January 15, 2013 at 9:56 pm

Can reconstitued lemon juice be used instead of lemons?

serious dieter January 16, 2013 at 12:43 pm

Are you able to substitute lemon juice (green bottle) for fresh lemons?

Deanna January 16, 2013 at 5:44 pm

A great alternative is lemon drops during the day. I have been using these for 10 years and find that they work great.

bob January 16, 2013 at 7:42 pm

You must be aware of the dangers to your teeth with this diet. The citrus acid can cause erosion or dissolving away of the enamel (outer layer of the tooth). the honey can cause cavities. Be very careful if you have a history of cavities and discuss this diet with your dentist. For someone with poor salivary flow or buffering capacity, frequent hard brusher, or high caries rate, this diet could cause significant problems

I am not quite sure how to do this lemon water diet. I have seen this particular diet on tv and it was my understanding to just drink this only (no eating ?) but for how many days. Lemon water diet will detoxify and help jump start your weight loss but like any diet you need to make it part of a life long change. Please be specific as to number of days to begin and how to incorporate into everyday healthy eating. Thank you

I’m a diabetic so I drink the diluted lemon juice without sweetening. And, yes, the acid is bad for your teeth so drink a small glass of plain water afterward to cleanse your mouth of the acid. Problem solved.

Katherine Willis January 20, 2013 at 9:06 pm

If you are drinking an extra glass of water after every meal, that is what is going to be filling you up. Most of the time when we think we are hungry, we are really thirsty.

anne January 21, 2013 at 12:54 pm

Would drinking through a straw help the erosion/dissolving of the tooth enamel ? ?

Bonnie Hayslett January 21, 2013 at 4:25 pm

I started drinking warm lemon water with honey every morning since the first of the year so that I could give up coffee with the sugar and cream. It works, I feel great and my energy is through the roof! I sometimes have a second or third cup late in the day or right before bedtime. It worked to help me give up coffee, I only had 2 cups of coffee so far this year about 2 weeks apart. I used to be unable to function without a cup of coffee first thing in the morning.

Vicky January 22, 2013 at 9:45 am

i have drank water/with lemon for about a year now, cause i gave up coke. But i never put the honey or anyting esle in the water,,,,
I just drink this all day,,,cold water with lemon…

Robin Weed-Brown January 22, 2013 at 3:03 pm

Can fresh limes be used instead of lemons? I have a lime tree and it would be great to be able to use them instead of buying lemons.

michele January 22, 2013 at 4:12 pm

are you people nuts? Only lemon water for 3 to 4 days? It won’t be the lemon that will make you loose the weight it will be the lack of the AT LEAST 1600 cals of food you need each day! Please, if you want to add it to a real diet plan, fine, why not. But do NOT just drink Lemon water or lemons for 3 to 4 days.

LDM January 22, 2013 at 8:35 pm

Bonnie since you’ve been doing this for so long, how much weight have you lost, if you don’t mind me asking. Do you need to be near a bathroom as soon as you drink this? Thanks!

Beatrice January 23, 2013 at 10:37 am

a. Real lemons should be used to retain the nutrients and receive the most benefits.
b. Agave, pure molasses, pure maple syrup can also be substituted – no sugar or sugar substitutes.
c. If using tap water, let it sit for at least 24 hours before use for chlorine to vaporize or use bottle or filtered water.
d. Start as a 3 – 5 day fast, no solid foods; then continue as desired, but at least first thing in the morning after you rise.

Rose, like you I am diabetic too. I take insulin 60 units Lantus 2 times. And Novolog before meals (sliding scale) each day. If I dont eat food and drink the lemon drink, does that mean I stop taking my insulin for the days I fast. I really need to loose weight according to my Dr. What is your opinion or have a suggestion to share with me on this. I havent consulted with my Dr. regarding this diet plan. Keep up the good work, hope you are successful. Any comment is greatly appreciated. Mary

I have been drinking “lemon water” for a long, long time. It’s a healthy alternative to soda and helps to quench my thirst. I know it also has detox properties and is supposed to flush fat out. I don’t know about fasting on it, but I do drink it more than ice water or soda. In fact, last night, I was soooo cold that I made some lemon water and put it in the microwave to warm it up. That tasted really, really good.

ccbywayofdc January 25, 2013 at 9:26 pm

I have been drinking warm lemon water and honey for about 2 months. To my surprise when I went to the doctor last month I lost 5 pounds with out even trying!

ccbywayofdc January 25, 2013 at 9:30 pm

Janie January 27, 2013 at 5:31 pm

Try lemon juice with green tea no sugar in the morning works great to lose belly fat

I agree completely that lemon water (warm) with honey and apple cider vinegar is good for you as long as it is at least 2 hours after taking blood pressure pills (earlier it messes up the pills making them useless) and also if you are satisfied that the lemon juice will not damage your teeth. I don’t know why the lemon promoters don’t deal with that issue. It is important. Use google search “effects of lemon juice on teeth” to research the problem. At lest rinse your mouth well with water after dring lemon juice.
No problem if you have false teeth……..or would like to have them :>)
